Bringing a Social Justice Lens to Filmmaking

Scribe Video Center uses digital media as an artistic means for creative expression and as a tool for progressive social change. Scribe provides training in all aspects of film, video and audio production. Welcoming of everyone, they intentionally reach out to those whose voices and perspectives have been mostly absent from media – people of color, women, youth, elders and those with limited financial resources.

Why we funded
  • Scribe is democracy in action, empowering people to tell their own stories through their own lenses
  • What is documented becomes a part of history and what is not documented is too easily erased from history. For example, Scribe’s work to document the history of Philadelphia’s neighborhoods shines a light the issues of redlining and gentrification that play out today
  • Scribe has developed strong partnerships across the city and fosters an environment of camaraderie, support and well-being
