Samuel S. Fels Fund

Sarah Martinez-Helfman, President

From “hike!” to haiku

Sarah Martinez-Helfman gave-up on waiting for the world to change, instead opting to co-create the world she wants to live in. At Fels Fund, she works with a small but mighty staff and a diverse Board to fuel social, racial and economic justice efforts for those who have been systemically marginalized. Prior to Fels, she founded and quarterbacked the charitable wing of the Philadelphia Eagles where her team’s social change work was recognized as best in the world by the international organization, Beyond Sport. Having lived and worked in four countries, this former nonprofit executive director, foundation program officer, psychotherapist and street musician now lives in Philadelphia with her wife, Marcia. Together they raised a son and fostered a teenager from Central America, each of whom expanded their hearts exponentially. A haiku enthusiast, one of Sarah’s poems has travelled to Mars on a space mission. Her favorite is:

“How can I explain
that the children will not wait?
They rely on us.”
